Farrer Park Hospital (FPH) and Carl Zeiss Pte Ltd jointly conducted a Zeiss Cataract Suite Certification Workshop for Nurses on Saturday, 25 March 2017. The workshop, targeted at operating theatre nurses, comprised two components – didactic lectures and a hands-on practical session. The theory portion was held at the TK Low Academic Specialist Centre in Farrer Park Medical Centre while the hands-on session was held at the Day Surgery Suite in FPH. The aim of the workshop was to share with operating theatre nurses on the latest developments in cataract surgery and to certify their competency in the use of the latest cataract technology adopted by FPH.

The Zeiss Cataract Suite is a collection of sophisticated ophthalmic equipment that are designed to work together for advanced cataract surgery. For example, the system allows the precise placement of special artificial lenses that corrects astigmatism, called toric intraocular lenses, without the use of pen markers. Using such advanced technology together with premium lenses improve the accuracy of lens placement and visual outcomes following cataract surgery.

The teaching faculty comprised Carl Zeiss trainers Ms Jil Teo and Ms Tan Pei Xian as well as Dr Au Eong Kah Guan, Medical Director and Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist from International Eye Cataract Retina Centre. The participants had to pass a competency test at the end of the course before they were certified by Carl Zeiss Pte Ltd. Four participants achieved perfect scores in the competency test.
