Eye Surgeons Conduct Public Forum To Raise Awareness Of Common Eye Conditions

As part of its effort to raise the awareness of blinding eye diseases, International Eye Cataract Retina Centre organised a free public forum on Saturday, 12 November 2016 at the TK Low Academic Specialist Centre in Farrer Park Hospital. It’s three eye specialists, Dr Ajeet Madhav Wagle, Dr Joy Chan and Dr Au Eong Kah Guan, gave informative talks on a variety of common eye conditions to members of the public who attended the forum.

Dr Ajeet spoke to the participants about cataract, glaucoma, dry eye and blepharitis while Dr Chan discussed the diagnosis and management of droopy eyelids, tearing problems and eyelash disorders. Dr Au Eong Kah Guan shared his experience on treating age-related macular degeneration, floaters, retinal detachment and diabetic retinopathy. He also gave 8 important tips on how to protect one’s vision.

The eye surgeons highlighted the early warning signs for each condition and emphasized the importance of regular eye examinations, especially for individuals with systemic diseases and positive family history. Many eye conditions do not produce symptoms in their early stages. Early detection through regular eye screening leads to better treatment outcome for many of these conditions.

More public forums on “Common Eye Conditions” have been planned in Farrer Park Hospital to help combat the burden of blindness in the community. Interested members of the public can register for these free public forums here.
