The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) is a prestigious professional organisation that promotes research and education in the field of intraocular lens implant technology and refractive surgery, and advances the study and practice of ophthalmology.

The Annual Congress of the ESCRS 2017 was held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 7-11 October 2017. Dr Joy Chan, Medical Director and Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at International Eye Cataract Retina Centre, attended the congress to keep herself abreast of the latest advances in cataract and refractive surgery.

The keynote address was the Binkhorst Medal Lecture which was delivered by eminent Russian surgeon Dr Boris Malyugin. He gave an inspiring talk on complicated cataract surgery.

Overall, it was an extremely educational and fulfilling experience for Dr Chan who attended many talks and symposia on a wide range of topics. She also enjoyed the sights and flavours of Lisbon, and returned to Singapore with a fresh perspective on cataract and refractive surgery.
