Dr Joy Chan, Medical Director and Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at International Eye Cataract Retina Centre, conducted a small group sharing session with optometrists and opticians in Farrer Park Hospital on 16 August 2017. As optometrists and opticians play a critical role in caring for the eyes of the public, the sharing session aimed to update and upgrade the knowledge and skills of primary eye care professionals and ultimately improve the standard of eye care in the community.
During the session, Dr Chan covered the diagnosis and management of a number of common eye conditions such as pinguecula and glaucoma which eye care professionals often encounter in their practice. The optometrists also had a refresher on ophthalmic instruments and equipment which they can use to examine their patients’ eyes more precisely and to help them make a diagnosis more accurately. Dr Chan has also provided some helpful tips that optometrists can use in different clinical scenarios to further aid their diagnosis and management of ocular conditions in their practice.
The sharing session was conducted in a question-and-answer format. The participants, who were from Vision Lab Eyewear, found the teaching session an engaging and fruitful experience.
