11 October 2018 is World Sight Day

Dr Au Eong Kah Guan, Medical Director and Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist, International Eye Cataract Retina Centre at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre and Farrer Park Medical Centre, Singapore

World Sight Day is an international day of awareness, held annually on the second Thursday of October, to focus attention on the global issue of blindness and vision impairment. It is the most important advocacy and communications event on the global eye health calendar.

World Sight Day 2018 falls on 11 October 2018. The theme for 2018 is “Universal Eye Health”. This year, the call to action for World Sight Day is “Eye Care Everywhere”. Let us draw attention to eye care issues so that everyone, everywhere has access to good eye health. Even in developed Singapore, not everyone has had an eye exam in the last 2 years. It is a great time for everyone to engage with the world around us – a patient’s family, those who seldom get an eye exam, the elderly and diabetics.

We know now that over 75% of visual impairment in the world are potentially avoidable. What can you do as an individual? Plan for an eye examination. Get your eyes tested. Look around in your family, especially for those who are vulnerable: the young, school-going childrenthe elderly and those with diabetes. Get their eyes checked. Tweet or post about World Sight Day to raise awareness of the event and its important health message.

In conjunction with World Sight Day, members of the public can have their eyes tested at International Eye Cataract Retina Centre for S$88.00 (inclusive of GST) from 11 October to 30 November 2018.
