Dr Joy Chan, Medical Director and Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at International Eye Cataract Retina Centre in Farrer Park Medical Centre and Singapore International Eye Cataract Retina Centre in Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre, kicked off 2018 by giving three talks to both doctors and the public. The talks were part of a campaign by the centre to raise the awareness of common and potentially sight-threatening conditions.

The first talk, on 25 January 2018, was held at Peach Garden restaurant, Orchid Country Club. The lecture was given to a group of general practitioners practising in the north of Singapore. During the lecture titled “The Red Eye”, Dr Chan covered common as well as less common but potentially serious conditions that cause the symptom of red eye. She also highlighted important points that might cause one to suspect a serious, blinding condition presenting with red eye such as acute angle closure glaucoma.

The second talk was on 27 January 2018 and was held at the Lifelong Learning Institute. This talk was held in conjunction with the “Eat Right for a Healthier You” event organised by the Asian Culinary Institute and Nanyang Polytechnic. Dr Chan spoke on common eye conditions such as cataract, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration conditions that affect the elderly.

The third talk was on 6 February 2018 at Revenue House. This talk was given to staff of the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore. It was organised by its human resource department as part of its staff welfare. Dr Chan spoke on common eye conditions with an emphasis on computer vision syndrome, a syndrome of eye pain and fatigue that commonly afflicts office workers in Singapore due to long work hours on computer screens.

The three talks were well-received by the participants, many of whom asked pertinent questions about caring for one’s vision health.
