Cataract surgery is the most common major surgery performed in the world. The technique used for cataract surgery has been constantly evolving, from the earliest documented technique known as couching to more recent ones such as extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE), phacoemulsification and femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery.
Advances in surgical techniques have led to safer and better surgical outcomes in recent years. One of the latest developments in cataract surgery, called computer-assisted cataract surgery, was the main focus in a symposium chaired by Dr Au Eong Kah Guan, Medical Director & Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist from International Eye Cataract Retina Centre in One Farrer Hotel & Spa on 2 August 2017. The meeting was attended by ophthalmologists and optometrists from Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.
The symposium, titled “Advances in Computer-assisted Cataract Surgery”, discussed some of the art and science of advanced cataract surgery. The two speakers for the symposium were Dr Chua Ee Chek from Gleneagles Hospital and Dr Bobby Cheng from Farrer Park Hospital. Dr Chua shared some insights on “Managing Astigmatism during Cataract Surgery” while Dr Cheng spoke on “Computer-assisted Cataract Surgery with Toric Intraocular Lens Implantation”. The talks were followed with a lively question and answer session.
