Ms Sophia Kim, a Year 6 Raffles Institution student, completed a short clinical attachment at International Eye Cataract Retina Centre during her recent June school holidays. She was at the eye clinic In Farrer Park Medical Centre on 14 and 16 June 2017, spending two fruitful days with its eye specialist and optometrists.
The clinical attachment was an eye-opening experience for Sophia as she observed first-hand how ophthalmologist Dr Au Eong Kah Guan, Medical Director and Senior Consultant at International Eye Cataract Retina Centre, managed eye patients who have sought medical attention from him.
Sophia had the opportunity to observe how Dr Au Eong and his optometrists took detailed ocular and relevant medical histories, conducted various eye investigations, diagnosed the patients’ eye problems and treated the conditions. Some of the common eye conditions seen in the clinic were cataract, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye and blepharitis.
Besides observing how the eye specialist and optometrists managed eye patients in the clinic, the highlight of Sophia’s attachment was an unique opportunity to observe modern computer-aided cataract surgery through an assistant scope in the Day Surgery Suite in Farrer Park Hospital.
